CIDH CONDENA CUALQUIER INTENTO DE ALTERACIÓN DEL ÓRDEN DEMOCRÁTICO EN ECUADOR

Washington, D.C., 30 de septiembre de 2010 –  La Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CIDH) condena cualquier intento de alterar el orden constitucional y democrático en Ecuador, así como la situación en que se encuentra el Presidente Rafael Correa, a quien se le estaría impidiendo salir del Hospital de la Policía Nacional.

Según la información recibida, agentes de la policía se amotinaron en algunos cuarteles del país. La CIDH hace un llamado urgente a estos sectores a deponer su actitud, a respetar en forma irrestricta el Estado de derecho y a adaptar inmediatamente su conducta de acuerdo al principio de sujeción al poder civil.

La CIDH es un órgano principal y autónomo de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA), cuyo mandato surge de la Carta de la OEA y de la Convención Americana sobre Derechos Humanos. La Comisión Interamericana tiene el mandato de promover la observancia de los derechos humanos en la región y actúa como órgano consultivo de la OEA en la materia. La CIDH está integrada por siete miembros independientes que son elegidos por la Asamblea General de la OEA a título personal, y no representan sus países de origen o residencia.

IACHR CONDEMNS ANY ATTEMPT TO ALTER THE DEMOCRATIC ORDER IN ECUADOR

Washington, D.C., September 30, 2010 – The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) condemns any intent to alter the constitutional and democratic order in Ecuador, as well as the situation of President Rafael Correa, who is allegedly prevented from leaving the Hospital of the National Police.

According to the information received, agents of the public force rebeled through mutinies in some barracks of the country. The IACHR makes an urgent call to these sectors to depose their attitude, to absolutely respect the rule of law and to immediately adapt their behaviour in accordance to the principle of subordination to civilian authority.

A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission is mandated to promote respect for human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this area. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in a personal capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
